Reactors 3 and 4 at Cernavodă: Contract Signed with International Partners
At COP 29 in Baku, a contract was signed for the development of Reactors 3 and 4 at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant. The agreement between Nuclearelectrica and a consortium of companies from the USA, Canada, and Italy marks a critical milestone for Romania’s energy security. Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja described the project as “the most important for the energy sector in recent decades,” with completion expected by 2031-2032.
The two CANDU reactors will add over 1400 MW of installed capacity, covering the annual consumption of 7 million households and reducing CO2 emissions by 10 million tons annually. Once completed, nuclear energy will account for over 30% of the national energy demand. The contract, structured into two phases (LNTP and FNTP), includes complex engineering and management services, paving the way for construction to begin.
